Paternalism? Dead.
Command and control? Dead.
Do as I say, not as I do? Dead.
Or are they?
Leadership today is not what it used to be. Expectations have moved on.
▫️These days people want their work to give them joy, fulfillment, meaning, purpose, growth, prospects.
▫️They want to feel included, respected, challenged, empowered, trusted, valued.
▫️They want to share ideas, challenge assumptions, debate, collaborate.
▫️They want reasonable flexibility in terms of where and when they work.
And yet, all too often, old styles of leadership persist, despite the fact that today they’re seen as toxic and stifling.
We know this because survey after survey after survey tells us that people are predominantly leaving companies because of toxic bosses and/or toxic environments for something better.
I know I have. More than once.
