When you look in the mirror, what do you see?
When asked that question we typically think about what’s literally in our reflection – our hair, our eye colour, what we’re wearing, whether we look tired or rosey-cheeked and healthy.
However, I’m not talking about what’s on the outside, but what’s on the inside.
About how well you know yourself, your embedded mindsets and your personal habits of thought and assumptions that drive your behaviours and your actions.
About what makes you you, and how that shows up in your leadership.
❓As a leader, are you someone who puts your own needs and career ambitions above everything else, including your team, or are you selfless and committed to being in service of others, pursuing those things that serve the wider organisational community?
❓Are you driven, rigid and relentless at work, pushing yourself, and your team, so hard that you risk burnout? Or are you able to find a balance that works for you and your family and colleagues, one where you find the time you need to renew and relax, to focus on family, friends and interests outside of work? So that when you are at work you show up with positive energy that helps you cope with the non-stop demands, stresses and complexity that go hand in hand with leadership today?
❓Or maybe, as a leader, you get moody, tired, stressed and anxious, buried under mounds of work and never having enough hours in the day, and so you take it out on those around, both at home and at work? Or maybe you’re the person who keeps their head, stays calm, remembers to breathe and tells yourself ‘this too shall pass’ as you calm the stormy waters and steady the rolling ship around you?
❓Perhaps you’re the leader who is so occupied with how busy you are, and so busy investing time in others and their learning and development, that you neglect your own learning? It’s easily done as one day blends so easily into the next, but remember that time doesn’t stand still, so you risk getting left behind as others advance around you. Or maybe you’re the leader who takes time out to learn, grow and experiment, and you encourage others to do the same with enthusiasm and joy, even when things go wrong?
And so now, when you look in the mirror, what are you seeing that maybe you didn’t see before? What are you curious about?
