Toxic bosses. Toxic environments. Ugh.
Perhaps you’ve finally declared ‘No more!’ and left that world behind.
Yay! 💪
And so here you are, transitioning into a new job, in a new company, with a sparkly new boss and brand new colleagues.
A fresh start!
A healthy environment. A caring boss.
Phew!
But…those voices of self-doubt are still echoing in your head and invading your heart.
“Was my ex-boss right that I have no leadership potential?”
“What if I speak up and I still get judged or shot down?”
“What if…what if…what if…???’ goes round and round your head.
Because the danger is, when we’ve lingered in toxic environments or been down-trodden by toxic bosses, that some of that toxicity has seeped into us to undermine our confidence, erode our sense of self-worth, and erase our self-belief.
We run the risk of not showing up as our full selves, despite our engaging new environment and supportive new boss, and creating a self-fulfilling prophecy on the back of our toxic experiences.
It can be hard to detoxify our thoughts and build ourselves back up to our full powerful strength. Especially if we’re in a new environment and maybe haven’t yet found our allies and created trust-based relationships that could support us.
But know this:
👉 You are NOT what that toxic environment tried to define you as.
👉 You are perfectly imperfect, just as you.
👉 You have strengths and talents and value.
👉 You know your stuff, and you’ve put in the work to build knowledge, experience and expertise to be a strong contributor.
👉 You have a voice, deep down you know how to use it and you deserve to be heard.
👉 You are not alone, and you don’t have to find your way back alone.
