Are you a dweller? Do you dwell on what was, what was said and done, what could have been but never happened?
Does looking behind you slow you down and stop you from moving forward?
In some ways the past is a convenient place to get stuck because it keeps you safe from the risk of the present.
And the present is more risky but it’s in the present that you can make a new decision, say something no-one was expecting, ask a provoking question that challenges the status quo, or do something radical to change an outcome.
You can’t change the past. What happened, happened.
The future is unknowable. What will be, will be.
So that leaves the present.
While we want to lightly carry our past lessons with us so they help to inform our present decisions, it’s important we don’t get weighed down by them.
Progressing, learning, succeeding is as much about being able to unlearn what we think we know so we can enthusiastically relearn, to look at something with fresh eyes and a new perspective, to explore new possibilities.
We never would have progressed from the horse to the high-powered sports car if we’d stayed stuck in the past.
So whatever you do, don’t let yesterday take up too much of today, because it will leave too little space for the present.
Simply because…it’s in the present, and the present only, that your potential comes to life.
What do you want to do with it?
It’s here.
It’s now.
