Think about it. The shoes we put on our feet are usually a clear indication of our intentions.
Flip flops – off to the beach on a warm sunny day 🏖️
Trainers – going for a walk, run, to the gym or a necessary part of the commute 🏃
Wellies – gardening or a muddy walk in the woods 🌳
Slippers – staying in 🛋️
Hiking boots – hill walking or climbing a mountain. ⛰️
We tend to know what we’re going to do, and then choose what’s best to wear, especially on our feet, to help us achieve our intentions most appropriately.
And we find out pretty darn fast when we’ve made the wrong choice or circumstances have caught us unaware and unprepared. Like having to run through the rain for the last train in your 5-inch heels.
But shoes, without saying a word, also give us permission for something.
Slippers are casual, comfy, cosy, and familiar and invite us to relax and be ourselves.
Our waterproof wellies invite us to get stuck in, jump in some puddles, stomp through mud and enjoy the outdoors.
And our sturdy hiking boots invite us to feel equipped to go places off the beaten track, to explore, discover, and push ourselves a little more.
And so it’s worth thinking ahead about what we’re expecting from our day and how to show up for it.
From the most appropriate shoes, to the most helpful mindset.
Because success depends on the whole package, not just the shoes.
If the plan is to go hiking, yes, we need to wear the right hiking boots, but we also need to pack a daypack with essentials like water, energy snacks and a fully charged phone, and we also need to feel adventurous and resilient enough to keep putting one foot in front of the other when the ground gets steep and rocky.
If the plan is to chill at home, then yes, we need slippers, a blanket, a good book or Netflix, and we also need to accept that we need renewal time and dispel any guilt.
So tomorrow, when you dress for your day, whatever that looks like, and you adjust your collar, your belt or the laces on your shoes, don’t forget to also adjust your mindset and your energy that you need to make your day the success you want it to be.
Because it’s your positive attitude, your can-do/want-to-do mindset, your determination, that keeps you moving forward.
Helped, ideally, by your choice of footwear.
Happy hiking!
What behaviour choices are you making?
We should first look to ourselves – how WE show up, how people experience US, and what impact WE have on the team.
