The R word.
Responsibility.
Not something we always want to own.
Because it can feel a bit heavy.
We’ve probably all worked with someone who’s said ‘that’s not my job’, or ‘it’s not my fault that wasn’t done on time’, or ‘how was I supposed to know…’
Pointing the finger in a host of other directions or throwing others under the bus feels like you’re diverting the spotlight from yourself. It may feel, at least in the moment, like you’re off the hook.
But the problem is…people know. Or they soon will.
So all you’ve really done is undermine their trust.
And consider this…by blaming someone or something else, you’re disempowering yourself.
Responsibility is about owning that next time something similar happens, you have the experience and wisdom to make a different choice, take a different action.
Especially if you want a different result.
It’s also about acknowledging that you still have something to learn. Which is a good thing. A great thing! Through learning we grow, and through growth we gain competence and confidence.
What choices are you going to make to grab responsibility with both hands this week?
