“While I’ve generally tolerated my tenure at [ ] for 10 years, I am leaving in order to pursue happiness”
This is an extract from a resignation letter doing the rounds on social media at the moment, and, sadly, it reflects how many people feel about their jobs and places of work these days.
Creating a safe, supportive, motivating environment where people can thrive and choose to engage starts at the top.
It is down to leaders to set the example, to behave and lead in a way that others will choose to follow and mimic.
If you don’t then sadly your company’s talent will drain away, and you’ll be more likely to see resignation letters like this.
And word will get out, and you may find it harder to attract new talent to replace the talent that has fled.
We all have a responsibility to be the best team mate we can be, but trying to do this in a hostile environment can be hard, and lead to emotional burnout.
And the pursuit of happiness elsewhere.
