I’ve had a lot of fun recently, earning myself a new badge, with the Riders & Elephants’ Emotional Card Deck training.
This new addition to my toolbox will help me to help my clients to safely talk about emotions in the workplace – not a subject that often gets talked about, and usually not in a way that can constructively and effectively turn negative emotions to positive emotions.
In fact, the conversations are often actively avoided and emotions buried or put on hold till home time. Or flare up in a sudden outburst.
As Maya Angelou so wisely said ‘you forget what people did, and you forget what people said, but you never forget how they made you feel.’
And we all know that our emotions powerfully drive our actions. If those workplace emotions are predominantly negative (e.g. overwhelmed, alone, controlled, intimidated etc), what behaviours and actions do you think they’ll drive?
We’re all cultural architects, there’s no ‘opt out’ on this one. Sorry, folks.
So what’s the emotional culture you want to be part of designing, building and nurturing in your workplace?
Please feel free to get in touch with me if you think I can help you and your team to get the conversation started.
