It’s all about perception.
Perception: “The way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted”, according to the dictionary.
We all see ourselves, others, situations and things around us differently to the person next to us. Because how we process all of this, and what makes us fundamentally us, is shaped by our very own unique experience of our life and the world around us.
Importantly, how we perceive and interpret ourselves will be different to how others perceive and interpret us.
Issues can arise when there is a gap between our own perceptions and that of others.
Especially for leaders.
In a McKinsey & Co. study of 80,000 leaders, 77% felt they were doing well engaging people and creating productive employees. But when employees were asked, 82% said their leaders were not good at engagement and productivity.
And in a 2 year research study done by Rasmus Hougaard of Potential Project, in conjunction with HBR, they found that 35% of employees would even forego a pay rise if it meant their leaders were fired.
These rather startling differences in perception highlight the necessity for leaders to invest time in developing their self-awareness and understanding their impact on others.
And that in itself can be tough when every day is crammed with back to back meetings, putting out fires, long hours, pivoting and restrategising in a constantly changing business landscape… the list goes on.
And yet.
Facing the gap, whether large or minuscule, means you’re giving yourself the opportunity to explore and understand what’s effective in your leadership, and what isn’t.
Where you think you’re an effective leader, but maybe others don’t. Or vice versa.
Where you react from a place of defensive, protective habits and mindsets, and where your creativity shines through to help mentor, motivate, collaborate and deliver against your organisation’s goals, vision and purpose.
Where your untapped potential lies, waiting for you to make different choices with how you lead.
Enabling you to lead from a place where your values, your heart, your courage and your creativity are your guide.
