Wednesday Wisdom time! Less than two weeks till Christmas!
So it’s that time of year where
🎄trees feature rather a lot
🎄where your dog, if you have one, wonders how come you get to bring a whole tree into the house when they can’t bring their half-chewed stick inside
🎄 you realise that if someone hadn’t planted your Christmas tree some years ago and then cut it down, it wouldn’t now be sitting in your home, decorated and lit up, bringing you joy and the cats a new climbing frame.
How many of us, as we snuggle up with some eggnog, look back over the year and wish we’d made some different choices and had started something sooner, just jumped right in and got on with it?
How many of us look at our work goals and personal development plans at year end and wish we’d got moving on them earlier in the year and given ourselves a chance to grow, in stead of trying to cram it all in at the end of the year, or perhaps just admitting defeat?
And how many of us tell ourselves, possibly every year, we’ll get started on the Christmas present shopping earlier in the year, and then don’t, so we’re now running around like headless turkeys in the run-up to Christmas? Again.
Reality check: Procrastination steals time and nurtures regret and frustration.
So, if you feel like it’s finally time to smash your procrastination cycle, here are some tips that may help:
1️⃣ Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps can make it feel less overwhelming and easier to get started
2️⃣ Setting specific goals and deadlines can fuel motivation and a sense of urgency
3️⃣ Prioritise and focus on the most important tasks as you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and momentum
4️⃣ Eliminate distractions that can derail your focus
5️⃣ Use productivity techniques like working in focused intervals or time blocking
6️⃣ Find accountability and support from a trusted friend, colleague, coach or mentor who can hold you accountable and provide support and encouragement. It really makes a difference!
7️⃣ Reflect on why you tend to procrastinate. Are there underlying fears, maybe lack of self-belief or motivation? Self-awareness can help you develop strategies to address them.
8️⃣ And celebrate small victories along the way.
Happy smashing! Happy planting! Embrace the journey.
What behaviour choices are you making?
We should first look to ourselves – how WE show up, how people experience US, and what impact WE have on the team.
